The municipality of Queimadas, known as the “City of Stones,” is located along the BR-104 highway, in the Agreste region of Paraíba, at the base of the Serra de Bodopitá, 137.5 km from the state capital, João Pessoa. Its 409.196 km² (IBGE/2001) borders the municipalities of Campina Grande, Gado Bravo, Barra de Santana, Aroeiras, Fagundes, and Caturité.
According to IBGE, its population is 47,658 inhabitants, making it the 12th most populous city in Paraíba. It also has the largest rural population in the state – 18,805 inhabitants (IBGE/2010). Furthermore, it holds the 10th largest electoral district in Paraíba, with 30,006 registered voters (TRE-PB/2010). Queimadas ranks 39th in territorial area among the municipalities of Paraíba.
Located within the Caatinga biome, Queimadas features prominent rocky outcrops such as Pedra do Touro, Pedra da Tartaruga, Pedra do Cachorro, Pedra do Bico, Pedra dos Três Reis Magos, and the Itaquatiaras dos Macacos, which contain engraved rock art. The surrounding area includes extensive woodlands and cliffs, with rich natural diversity, making it ideal for developing tourism activities such as: (1) ecotourism; (2) adventure tourism; and (3) leisure and recreational tourism, among others.
In terms of cultural aspects, the city of Queimadas/PB shows great potential, particularly in its traditions, such as the traditional Festa de Reis (Feast of the Kings), local handicrafts, gastronomy, June festivals (quadrilhas juninas), Coco de Roda (a traditional dance), capoeira, and other popular cultural expressions.
